Understanding the Basics of Car Paint Jobs

Cheap and premium paint jobs usually go through the same stages: preparation, primer where the repair needs it, colour and, where the finish uses one, lacquer. The difference can lie in the time spent at each stage and the products used. Two quotes for the same respray can differ a lot. Part of the gap can be labour time, and labour rates and overheads also differ between workshops.

A more thorough job usually puts more time into the same work, such as fuller preparation and checking the colour against the car before it goes on. Each coat also needs the flash-off or recoat time the paint maker gives. A low quote may cover less work, or shorter steps, so ask what each quote includes.

Priming: Setting the Stage for a Flawless Finish

Depending on the type, primer helps protect bare metal and repaired areas and gives the colour an even surface to bond to. It has to suit what it covers, as bare steel, aluminium and plastic each need the right product.

The difference between a cheap and a thorough job can show in how it is applied. Primer usually goes on in coats as the product's instructions set, with flash-off time between them, and is usually sanded flat once dry, though some primers are made to be painted over without sanding. Laid on too thick, or sanded before it has hardened, it can shrink back later and leave sanding marks visible through the colour.

A rushed job may skip sanding on a primer that needs it, or spray colour before the primer is ready. The finish can then show marks or unevenness, even when the colour is right.

Painting: The Art of Colour Application

A colour that does not match is one of the easiest faults to see, whatever the repair cost. The paint code identifies the factory colour, but paint on the car may have faded, and one code can come in slightly different shades. Mixing from the code without checking it against the car can leave a panel a shade out.

We match colour with the manufacturer's paint code, specialist colour mixing and a spectrophotometer. On a panel repaint the new colour is blended into the surrounding paint where it needs it. The colour then usually goes on in thin coats, each left to flash off before the next, as the paint maker's instructions set. Coats laid on too heavily are more likely to run or to trap solvent, and uneven spraying can leave a metallic colour looking patchy.

Finishing Touches: Lacquers and Clear Coats

On a base coat and clear finish, lacquer gives the gloss and protects the colour from UV and moisture. Two coats are common, though the paint maker's instructions set the schedule, and on a panel repaint the lacquer is usually taken across the whole panel so there is no lacquer edge within it.

Lacquer laid on too thin may not protect the colour for as long. Lacquer laid on too heavily can run, and lacquer sprayed in a dusty space can pick up specks. Small runs and specks can often be flatted and polished out where there is enough lacquer, while bigger faults can mean painting the panel again.

A spray booth helps keep dust off the wet lacquer. Dust specks in the finish can point to a dusty spraying area, and a visible line where the lacquer stops can point to a problem with how it was blended or masked.

Durability and Longevity: What to Expect

How long a paint job lasts depends on all of the stages above. Where the preparation was thorough and each coat was given the time the paint maker sets, the finish has a better chance of lasting. Where those steps were cut short, the paint can fail sooner, for example by peeling where it did not bond well. No paint job has a set lifespan, as it also depends on how the car is used and looked after.

Ask what guarantee comes with the work before you book. Ours covers workmanship for 6 months from the day you collect the car, which is a guarantee on the work rather than a measure of how long paint lasts.

Looking after the finish helps too. Small chips are worth sealing early with a paint touch-up before water gets under them, and light swirls in the lacquer can be taken out with scratch removal & machine polish.

Cost Considerations: Weighing Your Options

A more thorough job can cost more because it takes more hours, often in preparation.

A cheaper quote can still be fair, since labour rates and overheads differ between workshops. Ask each bodyshop what preparation is included, whether the colour will be blended, how many coats of lacquer go on, and what the guarantee covers. If one quote is far below the others, those answers can help show why.

Repainting a failed job can cost more than painting the panel properly the first time, because failed paint usually has to be taken back to a sound base before new paint can go on.
