Why a deep door scratch needs inspecting
A deep scratch can cut through the clear coat and colour into the primer or down to the panel itself. Polishing cannot replace missing paint. If bare steel is exposed, rust can develop, so arrange an assessment promptly.
The cost depends on the work needed across the damaged area. Scratch depth, position, nearby trim and any dent or corrosion can all affect preparation. The car's age alone does not determine the repair price.
Coventry Body Shop has one workshop in Wyken, Coventry. A written, itemised estimate comes first, with no deposit required.
A starting point for door paintwork
Single panel paint: from £150 plus VAT (£180 including VAT). The final price is set after the car is inspected.
This is the starting price for that service. An inspection must establish whether it is suitable for the door and what other work, if any, is needed. A dent or corrosion should not be assumed to be included without checking the estimate.
To compare paint touch-up, single panel paint and the scratch removal and machine polish service, see the car scratch repair cost guide.
Why the work can extend beyond the scratch
Repairing a deep scratch can involve cleaning, sanding damaged paint edges, priming where needed and applying replacement paint. Clear lacquer may also be required by the paint system. These steps depend on the damage and the existing finish.
The preparation area can be wider than the visible scratch. Door edges, creases and nearby handles or trim can also affect access. Ask which areas will be prepared and painted, and whether the estimate includes any blending into surrounding paintwork.
A touch-up is not automatically a substitute for this work. Applying paint before inspection may leave uneven material that needs removing during a later repair.
Matching the existing paint
Paint is mixed to the manufacturer's paint code and matched with a spectrophotometer. Paint thickness is checked with a paint depth gauge. Painting takes place in the workshop's spray booth.
The director, a former Aston Martin technician and painter, is the only person who paints the cars. The workmanship guarantee lasts six months, from collection.
Getting an estimate and planning the repair
A small inspection is free. A deeper inspection costs from £200 plus VAT (from £240 including VAT), deducted if the repair goes ahead. This is an inspection charge, separate from the repair price.
Send photos by WhatsApp or with the Send enquiry button. A close view and a wider view of the door help show the damage and its position. The final price is set after the car is inspected.
Minor scratches and chips usually take 1 to 2 days. Most repairs take 3 to 7 working days once started, parts permitting. A deep scratch may require more work than a minor surface mark.
If you are considering an insurance claim, use the written estimate when asking your insurer what your policy covers. Compare the repair estimate with your policy excess and ask about any potential effect on future premiums before deciding how to pay for the repair.
After a repair, ask when the new paint can be washed, waxed or treated. Use clean washing equipment to help avoid further scratches.
