How long does a custom paint job last?

A custom paint job has no fixed lifespan in years. How long it lasts depends on how the surface was prepared and the paint applied before you get the car back, then on exposure and care. Fading or loss of gloss can occur while the paint is still firmly attached. Custom paint can mean a change of colour or finish, including gloss or matte.

Why can't you put a fixed lifespan on custom paint?

Existing paint that is peeling, or corrosion beneath it, needs attention before a respray. At our Wyken workshop in Coventry, we check paint thickness with a paint depth gauge. Ask what needs removing before fresh paint goes on. Our workmanship guarantee runs for six months from collection; it does not predict the paint's lifespan.

What makes a custom finish fail early?

Contamination can prevent fresh paint from adhering properly. Thorough cleaning needs to happen before sanding or scuffing, so contaminants are not pushed into the surface. The area where the refinishing takes place should also be free of dust, oils and other contamination.

Other preparation and application problems can affect adhesion, which means how well the paint sticks to the surface or the layer beneath it:

• Improper sanding of the original surface can cause adhesion failure. Overspray can also interfere with adhesion.
• Masking tape can leave adhesive on the panel.
• Use compatible products within a single paint maker's system, following the specified mixing ratios and application instructions.
• Applying too much material with too little flash time, the interval between coats, may cause failure.
• Materials that have not been properly or thoroughly mixed can cause failure between layers.

What wears the finish once you're driving again?

Prolonged sunlight can contribute to paint deterioration. Bird droppings and tree sap can leave persistent deposits or permanent stains if left on paintwork. Stone chips and scratches are physical damage and can occur at any age.

Deal with droppings and sap promptly, using care advice suitable for your finish. Droppings are easiest to remove while still wet, and contaminants become increasingly difficult to remove the longer they remain.

How much sun, droppings and sap reach the finish also depends on where you park. For a gloss respray, use a suitable car shampoo and clean washing materials to avoid scratching. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so ask the painter when washing and waxing can begin.

How should you look after a matte custom finish?

Volvo's S60 Twin Engine manual, under 'Care and treatment of matte paintwork', advises gentle hand washing. For a custom refinish, confirm suitable products and methods with the painter.

Wash matte paint by hand as soon as the car becomes dirty:

• Hose off loose dirt and bird droppings before washing to reduce the risk of scratches.
• Use a microfibre wash mitt, vehicle shampoo and plenty of lukewarm water. Do not press hard or rub the paintwork.
• Insects, grease and fingerprints come off best with a detergent made for matte paint.
• Bird droppings can discolour the paint very quickly. Remove resin, sap, grease or oil immediately with a cleaner made for matte paint.
• Use a clean, soft microfibre cloth without rubbing. Pressure and rubbing during washing or drying can destroy the matte effect and make it permanently glossy.

The same guidance warns against paint cleaners, abrasives and gloss protection such as wax intended for high-gloss paint, because they can leave shiny spots.

What should you ask before a custom paint job?

Before agreeing to a full body respray, ask for clear answers about preparation, products and aftercare:

• How will the surface be cleaned and prepared? Ask whether any old coating needs removing and how corrosion will be dealt with.
• Will the products come from a single paint system? Ask which paint system will be used on your car.
• What care will this finish need? Ask for the care instructions for the chosen finish, including any restrictions while it cures.
• Will the vehicle's colour change? If it does, you must update your V5C with the DVLA.
