How Much Does Clear Coat Repair Cost?

The cost of clear coat repair depends on how far the damage goes. A light scratch that sits in the clear coat can often be polished out. Clear coat that has started to peel usually has to be sanded off and the panel refinished, which costs more. Cloudy clear coat can have more than one cause, so it needs a closer look before it is priced. Every price below is a starting price, shown plus VAT and including VAT. Your own price is set after inspection, and it depends on the paint chosen and the work needed.

Starting prices by type of damage

• Light scratches or swirl marks in the clear coat: scratch removal and machine polish, from £120 plus VAT (£144 including VAT) per panel.
• A small stone chip through the clear coat (not peeling clear coat): paint touch-up, from £49 plus VAT (£58.80 including VAT).
• A deeper scratch in one small area: SMART repair, from £75 plus VAT (£90 including VAT).
• Peeling or failed clear coat on one panel: single panel paint, from £150 plus VAT (£180 including VAT).
• Peeling clear coat across a bumper: bumper respray, from £210 plus VAT (£252 including VAT).
• Clear coat failing on many panels: full body respray, from £1,495 plus VAT (£1,794 including VAT).

Each price belongs to a different repair, so the one that applies depends on which repair the damage needs. A touch-up price, for example, does not cover peeling clear coat.

What the clear coat does

On most modern cars the paint is built in layers. Primer sits on the metal or plastic, the colour coat goes over it, and a clear lacquer on top gives the gloss. That top layer is the clear coat. It also takes the weather and the washing, so it is usually the first layer to show wear.

The colour coat under a basecoat and clear system has little gloss or protection of its own. Once the clear coat has peeled away, the colour underneath is open to sunlight and water, and it can fade or break down.

Clear coat damage and what each repair costs

Light scratches and swirl marks

Fine scratches and swirl marks from washing often sit only in the clear coat. Run a fingernail across the mark. If the nail slides over it, machine polishing may level the clear coat around the scratch and bring back the gloss. The fingernail test is only a rough guide. Our scratch removal and machine polish is priced per panel from £120 plus VAT (£144 including VAT).

Each polish takes off a very thin layer of clear coat, so a panel can only be polished so many times. At the inspection we can check paint thickness with a paint depth gauge, which reads the total thickness of the paint film. It helps judge whether polishing suits the panel, though it does not measure the clear coat on its own.

Marks from bird droppings and tree sap

Bird droppings left on the paint in hot weather can etch into the clear coat and leave a dull mark with a clear outline, and tree sap can stain it. Washing them off soon after they land is the simplest protection. A light mark can often be polished out with the rest of the panel. If the mark has gone through the clear coat into the colour, polishing will not remove it, and the area needs fresh paint, which for a small mark may be a touch-up or a SMART repair.

A deeper scratch in one small area

If the fingernail catches, the scratch is likely to be deeper. It may still sit in the clear coat or may have reached the colour, and polishing alone may not remove it. A scratch in one small spot, such as a bumper corner, may suit a SMART repair, where the repair is kept to a small area around the damage and the new paint is faded into the paint around it. SMART repair costs from £75 plus VAT (£90 including VAT).

Cloudy or peeling clear coat on one panel

Clear coat failure can show as a milky or cloudy patch, often on the roof or bonnet, which face the sun, or as fine cracks or a chalky surface. Clear coat that is failing can also lift at the edges and peel away. Once it has started to peel, polishing will not stop it.

The usual repair is to sand the panel back past the failed clear coat, prepare it, and spray fresh colour and clear coat. Spraying new clear coat over loose clear coat is not a lasting fix, because the new layer can lift along with the old one. Colour matching uses the manufacturer's paint code, specialist colour mixing and a spectrophotometer, and the new colour may be blended into the panels next to it, so the change from new paint to old is spread out rather than stopping at the panel edge.

Clear coat failing on bumpers

Plastic bumpers can lose their clear coat too, especially on older cars. When peeling clear coat covers much of a bumper, the whole bumper is often repainted. Our bumper respray starts from £210 plus VAT (£252 including VAT).

Clear coat failing across the car

When the clear coat has gone on several panels, a full respray can be an option instead of painting each panel separately. A full body respray starts from £1,495 plus VAT (£1,794 including VAT) and takes 3 to 7 days, depending on the work the car needs.

What changes the price of a clear coat repair

The first question is how deep the damage goes. If it stops in the clear coat, the repair may be a polish. If the clear coat has failed across the panel, the usual repair is fresh colour and clear coat on the panel, because taking off the failed layer disturbs the colour under it. A small scratch or chip that has reached the colour may suit a touch-up or a SMART repair instead.

The number of panels matters too. A repainted panel may be blended into the panels next to it, so a clear coat repair on a door can involve some paint on the wing or the next door. The paint itself is another factor. Metallic and pearl colours can need more work to blend, and some pearl colours are sprayed in an extra stage.

Earlier repairs can add work. A paint depth gauge reading much higher than the rest of the car often points to an earlier repair or respray, and old repair paint that is lifting has to come off before fresh paint goes on. Extra work seen at the inspection is priced into the written, itemised estimate.

Dealing with clear coat damage early

Peeling clear coat tends to spread. A patch the size of a hand on a roof can grow across the panel, and the colour coat under it can fade once it is exposed to sunlight. Bare metal showing in a deep scratch can start to rust if water reaches it.

DIY clear coat repair

Lacquer pens and aerosol cans are sold for small marks, and they can tidy up a tiny chip on an older car. Sprayed over peeling clear coat, they will not fix it, because the failed layer has to be sanded off and the surface prepared before anything new goes on. Sanding through the clear coat by accident turns a polish into a repaint, so if you are unsure how deep the damage goes, have it checked before you start.

Clear coat damage and insurance

If the clear coat was damaged in an accident, the repair may be part of an insurance claim. Clear coat that has peeled with age and sunlight is often treated as wear rather than accident damage, so check your policy before you claim.

A small inspection is free. For damage that needs a closer look, the deep inspection is charged from £200 plus VAT (£240 including VAT), and that fee is taken off the repair bill if you go ahead with the work. You get a written, itemised estimate before any work starts.
