What Does a Full Car Repaint Involve?

Much of a full repaint is preparation. It usually starts with a close look over the panels for dents, rust and earlier repairs that could show through new paint. Trim, lights and mirrors may be taken off or masked, depending on the car and the job.

Sound old paint is usually sanded to give the new paint a clean surface to grip, while paint that is already lifting or flaking has to come off first, as new paint will not hold on top of it. Dents are repaired, with filler where needed, and bent panels straightened where the car needs it. Where the repair needs it, primer goes on next. Depending on the type, it helps protect bare metal and gives the colour an even base, and it is usually sanded once dry. After that the colour goes on and, where the finish uses one, a clear lacquer for gloss and protection.

Our paintwork is sprayed in our spray booth by the director, a former Aston Martin technician and painter, who is our only painter. Once the lacquer has hardened, small dust marks on the surface can sometimes be flatted and polished out where there is enough lacquer to work with.

Why Proper Preparation Makes All the Difference

New paint can feel dry and still be hardening underneath. When new paint can be waxed or machine polished depends on the products used, so ask when you collect the car. Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and a soft microfibre cloth, and keep away from brush car washes while the paint is new.

Wash off bird droppings and tree sap promptly, since both can etch into lacquer. Where you can, park in the shade, as sunlight fades paint over time.
